ok, i’m trying to work out how to word this properly
nicki fucked up. that much is abundantly clear, and i’m not gonna say she didn’t, because she very much did.
but what im noticing is that a lot of the people who are calling her out on it, at least the people i see irl talking about it, are the same white queers who were head over heels for lady gaga’s “alejandro” vid, which is also heavily nazi themed with gaga herself as an eva peron analogue
and i feel like there’s a big disparity
i’m also thinking about why nazi imagery is so prevalent, i mean it’s ALL over american media, for fuck’s sake we have MULTIPLE television channels dedicated to basically glorifying hitler and the nazis and we use them or things strongly coded to resemble them as our go-to villains, and i mean, even look at Marvel selling god damn costumes of Hydra, their nazi analogue, to children for halloween
i think this is a huge part of what’s gone wrong, that we use the nazis so damn much and then come down hard on people (and disproportionately people of color) who then use this imagery that we’ve basically plastered all over our media
i think we need to have a serious look at how we use nazi imagery in media as a whole, because right now it’s clear that what we’re doing now as a country of consumers is really fucked up
antisemitism and a lot of fascist, racist, bigoted thought is on the rise worldwide, and i honestly fear that this weird worship american media has going on is only contributing to it
i’m not saying don’t talk about hitler or the nazis. by all means talk about them. but eliminate the reverence, and stop portraying them as some kind of fantastical monsters, because the true fear for me is not that nazis were monsters, but that they were normal, average human beings.
normal, average human beings perpetrate genocide. not monsters. people.
and that’s what scares the shit out of me.
